This page has two jobs. First, it explains everything printed on the bottle of liquid olive leaf extract we sell: what each ingredient is, and what the research does and does not say about it, including who was in each study, at what amount, and what each study actually measured. Second, and this is the part most advertising pages leave out, it lists the headlines we run about the heart and circulation, tells you which ones are exaggerated, and separates the small number of things that are genuinely supported by evidence from the many that are not.
You almost certainly arrived here from an advertisement. The headline you clicked was written by us and paid for by us to appear next to real news stories. It was designed to make you stop scrolling. Several of our headlines overstate what the science actually shows.
Everything on this site is a paid advertisement for a product we sell. If you buy through a link on any of our pages, we are paid a commission. That is the reason this site exists.
The product is a bottle of liquid olive leaf extract, Comvita Olive Leaf Extract, made by Comvita Australia Pty Ltd, on its farm at Coominya, Queensland, Australia and sold by Comvita USA, Inc. (Santa Barbara, California) as a dietary supplement. One serving is one tablespoon (15 mL) once a day, taken straight or diluted with juice, water, tea or a smoothie. It is a supplement, it is not meant for any health problem, and no study has ever tested this bottle itself. No food, drink or supplement on this page is a substitute for your own clinician.
If you are genuinely concerned about your heart or your circulation, the most useful thing you can do is book a visit with your own clinician. A yearly check measures things that no advertisement, no home test and no product can, and it costs you nothing from us. We would rather you close this page and make that call than buy something under a false impression.
If you take anything daily, show the label of this bottle to your pharmacist before the first tablespoon.
These are the headlines we have run, grouped by the claim they make, with the ones about the olive leaf first. The right-hand column is our own plain assessment. We have marked each one as Exaggerated, Partly true, Withdrawn, Our headline was wrong or Broadly supported.
| The headline as you saw it | What is actually behind it |
|---|---|
| "The Oil Comes From the Olive. This Tablespoon Comes From Its Leaf." | Broadly supported This is the headline of our own article, and it is the one we stand behind. Olive oil is pressed from the fruit; the extract we sell is made from the tree's leaves, whose most abundant plant compound is oleuropein, at levels that vary with the variety, the season, the tree's nutrients and the weather. [1] It is a statement about which part of the tree is in the bottle, not a claim that the leaf does what the oil does. What the research on olive leaf measured, in whom and at what amount, is in section 6. |
| "Olive Leaf: The Mediterranean Leaf Behind a New Morning Habit" | Exaggerated The Mediterranean eating pattern is food on a plate: three to nine servings of vegetables a day, fruit, cereals, fish, and olive oil for much of its fat. [2] An extract of the olive tree's leaf is not that pattern, it is not olive oil, and it is not a meal. Olive leaf has its own research, and it is small. In nine adults, oleuropein peaked higher in the blood after a liquid extract than after capsules; [3] in 40 healthy men around 60, 100 mg of oleuropein a day for 36 days raised a muscle-enzyme marker and did not change leg strength, how quickly the legs tired, or whole-body energy use. [4] Borrowing the reputation of a whole way of eating for a leaf extract was our shortcut, not the evidence, and the label says once a day, not "morning". See sections 3 and 6. |
| "The 20-Minute Walk That Beats 10,000 Steps" | Partly true The useful half: 10,000 steps a day is popular advice, not a guideline, and the federal activity guidelines use a 20-minute walk as their own worked example of setting a daily goal. [5] The overstated half is "beats". The guidelines set a weekly range of 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity such as brisk walking, plus muscle-strengthening on two or more days, [6] and bouts of any length count toward it. [5] A 20-minute walk every day adds up to 140 minutes a week, just under the bottom of that range: a fine start, not a finish line. See section 5. |
| "The Salt Swap Men Over 60 Are Making at Breakfast" | Broadly supported The broad idea holds. Americans eat on average about 3,400 mg of sodium a day against a limit of less than 2,300 mg, about one teaspoon of table salt, [7] and that limit applies to everyone 14 and older, not only after 60. [8] What we got wrong is the shaker. Over 70% of sodium comes from packaged and prepared foods, so the swap that matters is at the label, where 5% of the Daily Value or less per serving is low and 20% or more is high. [7] The bottle we sell: The panel prints no sodium line. |
| "Your Pulse Says More Than You Think. Take the 10-Second Wrist Test" | Our headline was wrong There is no 10-second wrist test. Counting your pulse is a real skill: two fingers below the base of the thumb, counting for a full minute or for 30 seconds and doubling, and for adults a resting rate of 60 to 100 beats a minute is considered normal. [9] A count tells you a count, and counting for ten seconds and multiplying by six only makes a one-beat slip six times bigger. See section 4. |
| "Can You Climb 4 Flights of Stairs in a Minute? What It Means After 60" | Exaggerated Stairs are good activity, and the activity guidelines say even climbing a few flights counts toward your week. [5] A stopwatch on a staircase, read against a number in an advertisement, means nothing: fitness, knees, the height of the steps and last night all change the time. The guidelines ask older adults to judge their effort against their own fitness, not against a stranger's number. [10] If stairs feel different from how they felt a few months ago, mention it at your next visit. |
| "The Red Tea Men Over 60 Are Drinking Every Morning" | Partly true The red tea is hibiscus: the dried red calyces of a tropical flower, brewed tart and deep red, with no caffeine of its own. It is a real drink with a long place in many kitchens. The bottle we sell contains no hibiscus, so we do not review its research on this page. What we made up is the crowd. We have no count of men over 60 drinking it every morning, and "every morning" was chosen because it sounds like a habit you are missing. |
| "Beet Powder: Why Men Over 60 Are Stirring a Spoonful Into Water" | Partly true Beet root is sold for its dietary nitrate. About 80% of the nitrate we eat comes from vegetables, and the body turns part of it into nitrite with the help of bacteria in the mouth. [11] That part is real. The studies behind the story used juice and whole foods, not a spoonful. Half a liter of beetroot juice a day for six days left nine fit young men using about a fifth less oxygen to walk, [12] and a single day of nitrate-rich food with juice changed blood flow in one region of the brain in older adults averaging about 75. [13] The bottle we sell contains no beet and prints no nitrate figure. "Men over 60 are stirring" is our phrase, not a survey. |
| "The Old Hedge Berry Europeans Have Brewed for Centuries Is Back" | Exaggerated The hedge berry is hawthorn, and the "centuries" part is fair: its berries, leaves and flowers have a long place in European herbal tradition. "Is back" suggests a new finding, and there is none behind that word; it was written to sound like news. The bottle we sell contains no hawthorn, so we do not review its research here. Tradition is the reason a plant gets studied, not a result. |
| "CoQ10 After 60: What Your Body Makes Less Of" | Partly true Coenzyme Q10 is real, and your body makes its own: it takes part in how cells turn food into energy. What the headline skips is the jump from "the body makes it" to "a softgel tops it up". The bottle we sell contains no CoQ10, so we do not review its research here. "After 60" is our framing: no birthday switches it off. |
An honest answer: these headlines appear beside real news stories, competing for attention with everything else on the page, and dramatic phrasing gets clicked. That is the incentive, and we are subject to it like every other advertiser.
It is also why this page exists. Once you are here, you are entitled to know exactly which claims we can stand behind and which ones were written to get your attention. Everything below is the sober version.
Our headlines have pointed at a leaf tea, "the morning drink", "the red tea" and a spoonful of beet, often without naming them. Here is each drink we were pointing at, and what the sources actually support. Where a study is cited, we say who was in it and what it measured; a short-term measurement in a small group is not a health outcome.
The traditional way to take the leaf · Accepted in Europe on tradition alone
What the research says. The European Union's herbal monograph on olive leaf accepts it only on the basis of traditional use. For adults it lists a decoction of 10 g of fresh or 5 g of dried leaves in 150 ml of water twice a day, or 6 to 10 g of dried leaf per infusion up to three times a day; it does not recommend use under 18, advises against it for anyone who has been told to drink less fluid than usual, and its committee noted studies in which olive leaf increased the daily volume of urine. [14]
Honest verdict. A real, old way to meet the leaf, judged by long use rather than by trials. On paper, one tablespoon of the extract we sell corresponds to 12 g of fresh leaf, a little above one cup of that decoction; the two are different preparations, and the monograph describes the tea, not a glycerin extract.
About the product we sell. The panel prints no caffeine figure, and none of its ingredients is a source of caffeine.
The "morning drink" in most versions · No reason in our sources to give it up
What the research says. The US Food and Drug Administration cites 400 mg of caffeine a day, about two to three 12-ounce cups of brewed coffee, as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in most healthy adults; a 12-ounce cup holds 113 to 247 mg, and too much can bring a faster heartbeat, jitters, an upset stomach, a headache and a poor night. [15] The European safety panel reached a similar place: single doses up to 200 mg and daily intakes up to 400 mg raise no safety concerns for healthy adults. [16]
Honest verdict. If you enjoy plain coffee, keep it, earlier in the day. What goes into the cup, syrups and sugar, deserves more attention than the coffee.
The other "morning drink" · A real short-term measurement, in small studies
What the research says. Green, black and oolong teas come from the same plant, and green tea contains caffeine. [17] In 21 healthy women, both green and black tea made the arm artery widen more easily two hours after drinking than water did, by about the same amount. [18] A meta-analysis of nine studies found the same direction at about 500 ml a day, two to three cups, with results that varied widely, and all three of its authors worked for a company that sells tea. [19] In one small study of 16 women, adding 10% skimmed milk erased that short-term effect. [20]
Honest verdict. A pleasant habit with a real, short-lived measurement behind it. It is not a health outcome, and it is no reason to choose a supplement over a teapot. The seller suggests stirring the olive leaf extract into tea; nothing in these studies tested that mixture.
The "red tea" in our headlines · Not in the bottle we sell
What the research says. Hibiscus is brewed from the dried red calyces of Hibiscus sabdariffa: tart, deep red and without caffeine of its own. The bottle we sell contains none, so we do not summarize its studies here.
Honest verdict. A good caffeine-free cup, hot or iced. If you take anything daily, show the box to your pharmacist first.
The drink behind the "nitric oxide" and "beet powder" headlines · Real measurements, at juice-sized amounts
What the research says. About 80% of dietary nitrate comes from vegetables, and the body turns part of it into nitrite with the help of bacteria in the mouth. [11] In nine healthy, physically active young men, half a liter of beetroot juice a day for six days raised plasma nitrite, and the men used about a fifth less oxygen to walk than after a juice stripped of its nitrate. [12] In older adults averaging about 75, a single day of nitrate-rich food that included beet juice left overall blood flow to the brain unchanged and raised it in one frontal region on a scan. [13]
Honest verdict. The studies used glasses of juice and plates of vegetables. The bottle we sell contains no beet and no nitrate figure. Beet can turn urine and stool pink or red for a day, harmlessly.
The "drink before bed" in some versions · Less is better
What the research says. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030, advise consuming less alcohol for better overall health, and say it should be avoided entirely by people who take anything daily that can interact with it. [21]
Honest verdict. Cutting back is sound advice, and nothing we sell offsets a drink. If you drink heavily every day, do not stop abruptly on your own: ask your clinician how to cut back.
About the product we sell. Its label says "Does not contain alcohol": the extract is made in vegetable glycerin, not in alcohol.
Part of every "drinks to avoid" headline · Broadly supported
What the research says. The same guidelines advise avoiding sugar-sweetened beverages such as sodas, fruit drinks and energy drinks, keeping fruit or vegetable juice to limited portions or diluting it with water, and keeping any one meal to no more than 10 grams of added sugars. [21]
Honest verdict. The easiest swap on this page: water, sparkling water, or unsweetened tea or coffee. The label of the bottle we sell suggests taking it straight or diluted with juice; if you use juice, keep the glass small or cut it with water.
About the product we sell. The label says no added sugar, but each tablespoon carries 10 g of carbohydrate and 40 calories from its sweet glycerin base.
The drink our ads rarely name · The caffeine and sugar add up fast
What the research says. A 16-ounce energy drink can carry 70 to 240 mg of caffeine and an energy shot 113 to 200 mg, against about 100 mg in an 8-ounce cup of coffee, and a 16-ounce can may hold 54 to 62 grams of added sugar; large amounts of caffeine can raise heart rate. [22]
Honest verdict. One can may carry more caffeine than two 8-ounce cups of coffee and more than five meals' worth of the per-meal sugar limit above. Worth leaving on the shelf, at any age.
The drink our headlines never name · The cheapest move on this page
What the research says. The current guidelines say to choose water, still or sparkling, and unsweetened drinks, and to avoid sugar-sweetened beverages. [21]
Honest verdict. It costs nothing and cannot be sold in a bottle. We leave it out of our advertising for the obvious reason, and we are putting it back in here. If a clinician has told you to drink less fluid than usual, follow that advice, and see the olive leaf tea entry above.
We do not print a list, and you should not act on one from an advertisement. Do not stop, cut back or skip anything a clinician gave you because of this page or any of our headlines.
Put everything you take, including what you buy over the counter, into one bag with this bottle and take it to your pharmacist. Ask: "Is anything here a poor fit at my age, and does anything here argue with this?" The label asks anyone who takes something daily for their glucose to check before use, and anyone pregnant or nursing to ask a healthcare practitioner first. The European monograph on olive leaf does not recommend it under 18, and advises against it for anyone who has been told to drink less fluid than usual.
The food headlines referred to "3 foods to stop eating", a salt swap, a Mediterranean leaf and "nitric oxide". The number three was ours, not a finding. Here is what was meant, and what stands behind it.
Behind the "Mediterranean leaf" headline · The pattern is supported as a pattern
What the research says. A review that defined the Mediterranean pattern in numbers described three to nine servings of vegetables, half to two of fruit, one to thirteen of cereals and up to eight servings of olive oil a day, with about 37% of energy from fat and about 33 g of fiber. [2] The current guidelines name olive oil among the sources of healthy fat, with omega-3-rich seafood, nuts, seeds, olives and avocados. [23]
Honest verdict. The pattern is a whole kitchen, not an extract. If the Mediterranean idea is what interested you, the olive oil and the vegetables are in the grocery store.
About the product we sell. It is made from the olive tree's leaves, not its fruit, and it contains no olive oil. Its most abundant leaf compound, oleuropein, is the one that makes a raw olive bitter before it goes into brine.
The "3 foods" and the "salt swap" · Broadly supported
What the research says. Americans eat on average about 3,400 mg of sodium a day against a limit of less than 2,300 mg, about one teaspoon of table salt; over 70% of it comes from packaged and prepared foods, and the top sources include deli-meat sandwiches, pizza, burritos and tacos, soups and savory snacks. [7] The limit applies to everyone 14 and older, and the guidelines add that highly active people may need more sodium to offset sweat. [8]
Honest verdict. Read the sodium line: 5% of the Daily Value or less per serving is low, 20% or more is high. [7] Cooking more at home moves the number further than any shaker.
Usually two of the "3 foods" · Broadly supported
What the research says. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030, advise avoiding highly processed packaged, prepared or ready-to-eat foods that are salty or sweet, such as chips, cookies and candy, [8] and swapping deep-fried cooking for baked, broiled, roasted, stir-fried or grilled. [23]
Honest verdict. Worth moderating, as a pattern rather than a ban. Not undone by any supplement, including ours.
Where most dietary nitrate comes from · Real measurements, in small studies
What the research says. Two day-long menus built on the same vegetable-rich eating plan delivered anywhere from 174 mg to 1,222 mg of nitrate, depending only on which vegetables and fruits were chosen. [11] In 30 healthy men and women, a single meal with nitrate-rich spinach raised markers of nitric oxide in the blood and was followed by a greater widening of the arm artery on ultrasound than a comparison meal. [24] The guidelines set a goal of 3 servings of vegetables and 2 of fruit a day on a 2,000-calorie pattern. [23]
Honest verdict. A plate of vegetables is the original nitric oxide food, and it comes with fiber and potassium that no bottle copies.
The mineral printed beside sodium on the label · Food first
What the research says. The Adequate Intake of potassium is 3,400 mg a day for men and 2,600 mg for women, and the listed sources include beans, lentils, tomatoes, potatoes with the skin, sweet potatoes, soy, winter squash, citrus fruits, cantaloupe, bananas, kiwi, prunes, apricots, milk, yogurt, nuts, meats and fish. [25]
Honest verdict. Get it from food. Ask before a potassium supplement, especially if you take anything daily. [25]
The "omega-3" food behind many headlines · Supported as food
What the research says. A 3-ounce cooked serving of farmed Atlantic salmon carries about 1.24 g of DHA and 0.59 g of EPA, Atlantic herring 0.94 g and 0.77 g, and sardines canned in tomato sauce 0.74 g and 0.45 g, against about 0.17 g and 0.02 g in light tuna canned in water. [26] The guidelines name omega-3-rich seafood among sources of healthy fat, [23] and the side effects of omega-3 supplements are usually mild, such as an unpleasant taste, heartburn or an upset stomach. [27]
Honest verdict. Two fish meals a week is a habit, not a purchase.
Drink more plain water. Drink less alcohol and fewer sugary drinks, and keep juice glasses small. Keep your coffee or tea if you enjoy them, earlier in the day, and go easy on what you stir into them. Read the sodium line on packaged food. Eat more vegetables, beans, fruit, fish and olive oil, and less from the fryer and the snack aisle. Every one of those changes costs nothing extra, and none of them requires anything we sell.
Several of our headlines invite you to test yourself at home: count your pulse for ten seconds, time yourself on four flights of stairs, take "the 10-second test". None of them is a validated test, and we cannot give you a real one, because a real check does not work that way.
What a home count can honestly tell you. Three things, and only these:
Of the eight components in the American Heart Association's own scoring, four are daily habits and four are measurements of the body that are best checked with a clinician. [30] No count, stopwatch or quiz on an advertising page can stand in for those.
If our headline worried you, take the worry to your own clinician at your next visit, or sooner if something has changed. If it was only a startling headline, the reassurance you want cannot come from a test in an advertisement, including ours.
If we only had one section to be useful in, this would be it. None of these is a supplement or a list of three foods, and none of them can be sold to you by us.
These are unglamorous. They cannot be delivered in a headline, they take years, and they are, by a wide margin, the most useful things on this entire page.
What each ingredient printed on the label of Comvita Olive Leaf Extract is, what it is traditionally used for, and what the cited research says, including who was in each study, at what amount, for how long, and what each study actually measured. One serving is one tablespoon (15 mL) once a day, taken straight or diluted with juice, water, tea or a smoothie. The panel, line by line: per tablespoon (15 mL), calories 40; total carbohydrate 10 g (4% of the Daily Value); olive (Olea europaea) leaf extract 7.5 mL, equivalent to 12 g of fresh olive leaf, standardized to 80 mg of oleuropein and 750 mcg of hydroxytyrosol. Other ingredients: vegetable glycerin. About 33 servings per 500 mL bottle. The panel has one active line and one base. The active line gives three figures: a volume of extract, the fresh leaf it corresponds to by the maker's own figure, and the standardized amounts of two leaf compounds; the base, vegetable glycerin, fills the rest of the tablespoon and supplies its calories and carbohydrate. The label says it is made in Australia from local and imported ingredients, with leaves grown on the maker's own grove; it is "Manufactured for Comvita USA, Inc.", while the seller's website is run by Comvita Limited and its subsidiaries, the New Zealand parent. When we read the listing it displayed the words "Variant sold out or unavailable" as template text, while the bottle was in fact available. No study has tested this bottle; one Australian laboratory analysis of products sold there in 2019 and 2020 included two Comvita liquids, and every product that printed an amount met or exceeded it. [32]
The leaf of the olive tree, the same tree that gives olives and olive oil. Its most abundant plant compound is oleuropein, a bitter polyphenol that the body breaks down into hydroxytyrosol; the amount varies with the tree variety, the season and the weather.[1]
Traditional and everyday use. Brewed as a tea around the Mediterranean; the European Medicines Agency lists it as a traditional-use herbal product, with a decoction of 10 g of fresh or 5 g of dried leaves in 150 ml of water twice a day.[14]
What the research says. Olive leaf extract delivers its compounds to the blood: in nine adults, oleuropein peaked higher after a liquid than after capsules, and the hydroxytyrosol compounds peaked sooner.[3] The body transforms them extensively and clears most of them in the urine within about six hours.[33] In a 36-day trial of 40 healthy men around 60, 100 mg of oleuropein a day raised a muscle-enzyme marker of cellular energy use at rest but did not change leg strength, how quickly the legs tired, or whole-body energy use.[4] Products vary widely in what they contain; in an Australian analysis, every product that printed an amount met or exceeded it.[32] We make no claim beyond this.
Amount per serving in Olive Leaf Extract · Natural · 16.9 fl oz (500 mL). 7.5 mL (equivalent to 12 g of fresh leaf) (standardized to 80 mg of oleuropein and 750 mcg of hydroxytyrosol per tablespoon)
Good to know. The European monograph does not recommend olive leaf for anyone under 18 and advises against it for anyone who has been told to drink less fluid than usual; studies noted a larger daily volume of urine.[14] In rats, a water-soluble olive leaf extract showed no toxic effects over 90 days, which does not settle the question for people.[34] If you take anything daily, particularly for your glucose, ask your pharmacist before starting it. If you are pregnant or nursing, ask your clinician first.
A clear, sweet, syrupy liquid obtained from plant oils. In an alcohol-free liquid it is the base: it sweetens, carries and holds the other ingredients and keeps the bottle from spoiling.
Traditional and everyday use. Used in food and in herbal preparations for people who avoid alcohol.
What the research says. A carrier, not an active ingredient; no claim.
Amount per serving in Olive Leaf Extract · Natural · 16.9 fl oz (500 mL). — (the rest of the 15 mL) (source of the 40 kcal and 10 g of carbohydrate per tablespoon)
Good to know. Generally recognized as safe as a food ingredient; large amounts can loosen the stomach.

Set against the headlines that brought you here, this is the complete and honest position.
Things we cannot promise, and that nobody selling you a bottle can:
Things we can say honestly:
No. The oil is pressed from the fruit; this extract is made from the leaves, in vegetable glycerin, with no oil in it.
The label says the 7.5 mL of extract in each tablespoon is equivalent to 12 g of fresh olive leaf, standardized to 80 mg of oleuropein.
In one study of nine adults, oleuropein peaked higher in the blood after a liquid than after capsules. [3] It measured blood levels after one dose, not any effect.
The FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects in most healthy adults. [15] Too much can bring a faster heartbeat and jitters, so keep it earlier in the day.
One small study of 16 women found that milk erased tea's short-term effect on how easily the arm artery widens. [20] One study is not a rule, so drink it the way you enjoy it.
There is no official step number, and 10,000 is popular advice. Set minutes first: 150 to 300 a week of brisk walking or similar. [5] [6]
Fast enough that you can talk but not sing. [28] In healthy adults aged 61 to 85, that began at about 100 steps a minute. [29]
Yes: count for a full minute, or for 30 seconds and double it, and 60 to 100 at rest is considered normal for adults. [9] A count is a count, not a check-up.
The panel prints no caffeine figure, and none of its ingredients is a source of caffeine. The label says no added sugar, but each tablespoon carries 10 g of carbohydrate and 40 calories from its sweet glycerin base. The panel prints no sodium line.
Possibly, so take the bottle to your pharmacist before the first tablespoon. The label asks anyone who takes something daily for their glucose to check before use, and anyone pregnant or nursing to ask a healthcare practitioner first. The European monograph on olive leaf does not recommend it under 18, and advises against it for anyone who has been told to drink less fluid than usual.
The seller offers no satisfaction promise. Its return policy asks you to email hello@comvita.com within 7 days of receiving your order; the bottle must be unopened, as it arrived, with the packing slip; you pay the return shipping, and the refund is issued "minus a 20% restocking fee" to your original payment method.
Do not take our word for it: every numbered reference below is a real, published source you can look up. Where a headline and this page disagree, believe this page.
No. Read it, close the tab and never come back, if you like.
These are the sources behind the claims marked with a number above. Most are government guidance or small, short studies. The olive leaf studies were small and measured levels in blood, urine and muscle; the laboratory analysis looked at products sold in Australia; the European monograph judges the leaf on traditional use. The tea meta-analysis was written by employees of a tea company; the beet juice study was in nine fit young men; the tea and spinach studies measured a short-term widening of the arm artery, not a health outcome. None of them tested this bottle. We have deliberately not cited anything for the claims we describe as exaggerated, because there is nothing to cite.
Citing a study does not mean the study is about this product. The studies above tested one food, drink or ingredient at a time, in other people, at their own amounts; none of the research tested Comvita Olive Leaf Extract, and none of it supports it.
